R&D Scientist in Power System Protection
For our research center in Krakow/Poland we are looking for an R&D Scientist in Power System Protection. You will be part of our research team working on development of next generation protection algorithms for power grid infrastructures.
Your responsibilities
- Contribute to and lead research and development projects creating new algorithms and methodologies for electric power system protection and substation automation
- Collaborate with a global team of researchers and engineers in Hitachi Energy business units to identify and solve real-world challenges for our customers through expertise in power system protection and automation
- Develop and maintain an expert level of knowledge of digital protective relay (IED) applications, substation equipment and solutions dedicated to electric power system protection and automation
- Validate research findings through simulation, prototyping and/or demonstration, as applicable
- Identify and validate business propositions (e.g. increased safety, robustness, maintainability, etc.) of developed technologies to facilitate technology commercialization
- Create research ideas and proposals, secure buy-in from internal / external sponsors
- Collaborate with local and global external partners including universities, startups and vendors
- Generate intellectual property, publish research in peer-reviewed conferences and journals
Your background
- Strong academic qualification with an internationally recognized degree at Master’s or PhD level in Electrical Engineering or any related field
- Technical experience with power system protection and substation automation
- Practical knowledge of modeling and numerical simulation software e.g. any of MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, ATP, PowerFactory or similar;
- Experience in applying digital signal processing techniques (e.g. spectral analysis, filter design)
- Ability to adapt to different team sizes – from single-person studies to participation in large teams
- Willingness to take an interdisciplinary approach, working with experts from domains away from own area of expertise.
- Experience that demonstrates your team-oriented, innovative, and strategic working styles
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
- Nice to have: knowledge and experience spanning multiple disciplines (e.g., electrical, mechanical, control, statistics and efficient numerical algorithm design) especially those related to power systems beneficial
- Nice to have: Software development experience in C, C++ or other languages beneficial
- Nice to have: Experience with data analytics, machine learning and/or artificial intelligence technologies beneficial
