Reuters is seeking a dynamic, experienced business news editor to help build our Gdansk newsroom into a powerhouse of full-spectrum corporate and financial coverage. Working across the full span of our most culturally diverse bureau, you will work continually and closely with reporters to direct and deliver fast, smart breaking news about companies across Europe. You will rapidly develop the reporting and writing skills of over a hundred talented, multilingual journalists, most in the early phase of their careers. Your success will be measured through the seamless daily flow of corporate coverage from the bureau and the flourishing careers of the next generation of Reuters reporters and editors.
The successful candidate will be a positive, collaborative editor able to coach and mentor, as well as lead from the front on a big story when needed. You will know when to run a story at the pace required of our clients and when to take pause for a teachable moment. You will be closely involved with all phases of coverage, from preparation and planning ahead of earnings seasons through post-wrap analysis, providing constructive feedback to foster constant improvement.
As an experienced business journalist, you will have deep knowledge of how companies and financial markets work, from financial statements to activist investors, and will be able to inspire reporters to drive the overall improvement of the file and the confidence of the bureau. You will work in close collaboration with Reuters colleagues around the world and help enhance collaboration between Gdansk and other bureaus.
You will be a patient leader and take pride and satisfaction from the development of skills within the bureau and the career progression of young reporters. While this is a full-time assignment, shorter one-year secondments will also be considered.
As News Editor, Gdansk, you will:
Work closely with reporters across the bureau, in coordination with newsroom leaders, to execute major financial and business breaking news stories
Drive an improvement in quality and speed of writing and reporting through working in real-time with reporters and editors
Focus on coaching and mentoring core talent to help develop reporting and writing skills
Suggest ideas for Gdansk input to major global stories and act as the main partner for global editors
Own the initiative file in Gdansk in collaboration with relevant editors, from Factboxes and quick pivots to more deeply reported business stories
Provide regular training on Reuters style and different story types
To be our News Editor, Gdansk, you are likely to have:
At least 10 years financial news experience, including at least 5 years in an editing or leadership capacity
Complete mastery of how to cover a breaking financial news story at speed, from first alert to final analysis
Complete fluency in financial market jargon, PR-speak and earnings gibberish – and the ability to quickly turn it into clear, succinct Reuters prose
Outstanding proven skills as a coach and mentor to other journalists and embrace active development of journalists’ careers
Have a drive to continuously improve the quality, speed and depth of the news file
Uphold the Trust Principles and ethical standards of Reuters every day, in every respect.
Native English, additional European language skills are a plus
